Newton County Youth Action Team Leads a Busy Fall of Service and Prevention

The Newton County Youth Action Team (YAT) has had a busy start to the school year, leading and supporting events across the community that promote youth leadership, prevention education, and service.

Building Momentum in August and September

In August and September, YAT members represented their schools and community at several outreach events, including the Newton County Schools Special Education Back-to-School event, NCCA Club Day, and the DFCS Youth Summit. These events helped students learn about volunteer opportunities and connect with local partners.

Members also volunteered at the Sounds of Support community event and began developing a student-led NARCAN awareness video to support opioid prevention efforts. To welcome new members, YAT hosted a back-to-school social in September, creating space for students to meet and share ideas for the year ahead.

Growing Skills and Giving Back

This fall, YAT members participated in BOUNCE resiliency training and volunteered at community events such as It’s Fall Y’all and Change the World Day, both of which encouraged connection and service across Newton County.

Looking Ahead: Red Ribbon Week and Community Partnerships

October brings one of YAT’s biggest annual efforts—Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign promoting drug-free living. This year’s theme, “Life is a Puzzle—Solve It Drug Free,” will inspire creative school-based activities that encourage students to make healthy choices.

In the weeks ahead, YAT members will assist with the Becoming a More Resilient Parent workshop hosted by A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center and the Newton County Schools Special Education Department. They’ll also take part in the Community Connect Resource Fair on November 8, hosted by the Newton County School System.

Empowering Youth to Lead and Serve

The Newton County Youth Action Team is a student-led initiative supported by the Newton Community Partnership and the Newton County Drug Free Community Coalition. Together, they empower youth to make positive choices, promote mental health, and strengthen community resilience through peer leadership and service.
