Newton County YAT Volunteers at Newton County Schools Literacy Extravaganza

Reading opens doors — and the Newton County Youth Action Team showed up to help hold them open.

On February 7, 2026, seven YAT members volunteered at the Newton County Schools Literacy Extravaganza, held at Newton High School, spending 2.5 hours engaging with elementary school students and families at their activity table. Members read stories aloud and guided young attendees through hands-on literacy activities tied to the books, creating an interactive experience that made reading feel fun and accessible.

The event reached 75 community members and marked a milestone for the YAT — one new member joined the team that day. The Literacy Extravaganza is exactly the kind of community event where the YAT's peer leadership shines, connecting older students with younger ones in a meaningful way.
